Getting started
openGaro is an open-source AI agent workspace. It runs fully locally with Ollama, or with your own API keys — no telemetry, no lock-in.
What you'll need
- A computer running macOS, Linux, or Windows.
- Node.js 18+ for the app, or Docker for the packaged runtime.
- Optional: an API key from OpenAI, Anthropic, Google, or another provider.
Quick facts
- Every agent is a named role with its own tools, model, and instructions.
- MCP servers let agents reach real apps — files, GitHub, Slack, Gmail and more.
- Everything is open-source and runs on your machine or your cloud.
02
Quickstart
Install, run, and fire up your first agent in under a minute.
Installbash
git clone https://github.com/yourorg/openGaro
cd openGaro
npm install
Then
- Open http://localhost:3000 and create your first agent from the New agent form — give it a name, role, and model.
- Attach tools and MCP servers from the catalog, then connect real accounts (Gmail, GitHub, Slack, Notion).
- Message the Orchestrator and watch it split the work across your agents.
03
Agents
Agents are the heart of openGaro. Each one is a role with its own brain and toolset.
Creating an agent
- Pick a name and a role — e.g. a research agent, a writing assistant, a publisher.
- Choose a provider and model (GaroAI, OpenAI, Anthropic, Google, or local via Ollama).
- Attach the tools it needs for its job. Role-appropriate tools only.
How they work
- Agents carry their own system prompt describing how they should behave.
- The Orchestrator hands work between agents and threads so tasks complete end-to-end.
- Give each agent enough context and the right connections and it stops needing babysitting.
04
Tools & MCP
Tools turn agents from chatbots into doers. MCP servers plug agents directly into the apps you already use.
Built-in tools
- Files: read, write, and organize files in a sandboxed workspace.
- Terminal & code: run safe commands and write multi-file projects.
- Browser & search: browse the web and pull real, current data.
MCP servers
- Pick from the integrations catalog — GitHub, Slack, Gmail, Notion, Figma, and more.
- Connect an account once; agents then call it in their own workflows.
- Bring your own MCP server with a custom URL or a local stdio config.
05
Connections
Connect your real accounts so agents don't just talk about work — they do it.
Supported connections
- Email: Gmail read, send, and drafts from a single thread.
- Socials: X, Instagram, LinkedIn, Discord, Reddit, Meta Ads.
- Productivity: Notion, Slack, Google Calendar, Drive, and more.
- Developer: GitHub repos, issues, PRs, and code search.
Privacy
Connections are tied to your accounts and your keys. openGaro sends no telemetry and stores nothing beyond what you ask it to do.
06
Automations
Schedule posts, auto-reply, and trigger workflows that keep working while you sleep.
What you can automate
- Scheduled posts and content pipelines across your socials.
- Auto-replies and inbox triage from connected email and chat.
- Event-driven workflows that fire when something changes in a connected app.
07
Self-hosted
Run openGaro entirely on your own hardware or cloud — your keys, your data, your cost.
Ways to run
- Fully local with Ollama — no API keys and no internet required.
- Bring your own OpenAI, Anthropic, Google, and other keys.
- Deploy the packaged runtime anywhere you can run Node or Docker.
No lock-in
openGaro is open-source, works with any model, and runs with no telemetry. You can switch providers, move hosts, or roll your own at any time.
